Suspended
between fairy tale and social documentary Ice Baby
is a series of fragments and narratives exploring young women’s
experience of becoming mothers.
On a winter’s night a baby is left locked in a car whilst
his mum goes clubbing
In the wing of a women’s prison a young woman hears
threats through the wall
‘bad mother, baby basher, baby killer’
When her boyfriend goes away to sea a young girl convinces
herself that goblins have taken her beautiful baby in the
night, replacing it with something distant and unlovable –
an ice baby.
To be developed with teenage girls in Barrow-in-Furness, Ice
Baby touches the taboos surrounding our reactions to
mothers with life styles and cultures which don’t fit
in with our ideas of good parenting.
