The
first ten years
Barrow Youth Theatre began working in 1991,
and the productions have always steered away from expected
ideas of youth drama. The shows have varied from pieces of
choreography, to original devised pieces, to adaptations,
to completely improvised performances. Two pieces were written
specifically for the group by emerging young writers. The
company has also performed on the streets of Barrow with street
theatre and carnival performance

A piece of movement set to music about a day in the life of
a street.

Erik
the Viking
An adaptation of the Terry Jones book following the adventures
of Erik and his men as Erik tries to prove the world is round,
like an orange.
Phill’s
Flat
An improvised show performed over two nights, a structure
of scenes and games performed by different cast members each
night.

People Talking

Snow Queen
An adaptation of Hans Andersen's story, with narrating ravens.
Little
Nippers
A tetanus jab sends a weekend Dad mad. He abandons his children
and goes off with a crab. The kids thwart an ice cream van
theft and find their own way home before the social workers
come round.

We Were Queens

As part of New Writing North’s Future Tense festival,
Barrow Youth Theatre performed the first production of a play
about the boys who played the female parts in Shakespearian
times.

20th Century (abridged)
To mark the year 2000 a potted history of the last century
devised by the company and sticking (mostly) to the facts,
unless there was a very good gag to use!

An adaptation of Philip Pullman's novel about the mysterious
